Dr Joanne Tong
B. Sc (Med), MBBS, FRACGP, DCH

Dr Jo completed her medical degree at UNSW in 2006, followed by hospital training in Orange NSW. She then completed her specialist GP training in Albury NSW, where she continued to work as a dedicated GP for 10 years prior to relocating to the Southern Highlands in 2020. She is currently working as an independent GP from The Women’s Health Centre Southern Highlands in Mittagong NSW. Having worked exclusively in regional areas, Dr Jo is extremely familiar with the unique challenges that this may present.

Dr Jo strongly advocates patient-centred, comprehensive health care, and is known for her compassionate, thorough and methodical approach. Although she enjoys all aspects of general practice, she has a special interest in women's health, including perimenopause/menopause, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis and more. She has a keen interest in managing complex, chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, osteoporosis, asthma, bowel conditions and cancer care (just to name a few!).

She is also passionate about low carb lifestyle medicine to optimise cardiometabolic health, and to work towards reversing common conditions such as insulin resistance, diabetes and fatty liver disease, whilst supporting sustainable weight goals. Dr Jo uses the principles of a holistic low carb lifestyle to lessen the impacts of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, persistent pain, mental health conditions and other chronic health conditions.

Ever a strong believer in "prevention is better than cure", Dr Jo takes a preventative approach to address any health issues early. She works in collaboration with patients, together with a multidisciplinary team if required, to empower them to take charge in their own journey toward longterm wellness and to achieve their health goals.

Dr Jo is interested in children’s health, and welcomes children of existing patients of The Women's Health Centre. She has completed further ADHD training and is able to provide continuing prescriptions for patients whose medications have been stabilised.

Dr Jo believes in the importance of providing quality education to the next generation of doctors and medical students, and has been a GP Supervisor for many years.

In her spare time, Dr Jo volunteers as  a GP with Street Side Medics, a charity that provides much needed health care to the homeless and those facing socioeconomic insecurity. She is an avid traveller and a keen photographer. And most importantly, she has a deep love  for animals, especially dogs! She fosters a number of Siberian huskies.
